Eastwood and Barrymore Theatre (Madison, WI)

Eastwood and Barrymore Theatre (Madison, WI)
One of the many aesthetically-significant performance venues in Madison is the Barrymore Theatre on Atwood Avenue.

The Barrymore was originally named the Eastwood, and opened in December 1929 as the very first theater in the state specifically designed for "talkie" films. The building was designed by architects Frederic J. Klein and H.C. Alford and featured very ornate architecture, topped by a Renaissance-inspired octagonal dome. Although it made a grand debut, the theater’s business struggled under the wake of the Depression and the property switched hands several times. By 1967 the theater had been acquired by the Milwaukee-based 20th Century chain, and changes were afoot. The interior was modernized and blandified and the venue was renamed simply "Cinema." By the 1980s both the theater and the neighborhood that surrounded it were in decline, and it rarely showed much beyond a stream of X-rated films.

In 1987 the property was sold once again and the theater was reincarnated as the "Barrymore"…a home for live performances and art-house/budget films. The last films were shown in 1992, but the live music side wound up taking on a life of its own with a full schedule of performers booked month after month. And such it remains today…

Garner Park shelter (Madison, WI)

Garner Park shelter (Madison, WI)
Garner Park is located on the west side of Madison, and contains a number of walking paths and sports facilities.

What makes the place so unique and striking, however, is a multi-level hilltop shelter building built in 1976. This structure was designed by architect Stuart William Gallagher and won an award in a national park facility competition for which it had been submitted.
